Apprentices from Morris Joinery have taken their skills beyond the workshop to support local biodiversity by hand-crafting owl boxes for a construction site at Hortonwood.

Made entirely from workshop off-cuts, the owl boxes feature a sustainable, upright design recommended by the RSPB. Each box includes a felt roof for weather protection and an inspection hatch to allow for easy maintenance and monitoring.
Designed to support local owl populations, the entrance to each box will be carefully positioned to face north, east, or northeast—shielding inhabitants from prevailing winds and direct sunlight while offering a clear view of open areas for easier access.
“We’re proud of our apprentices for combining craftsmanship with conservation,” said Morris Property Construction Manager Steve Flavell. “This is a great example of how construction projects can positively contribute to the local environment whilst also demonstrating that you can turn potentially a waste product into something useful”
The initiative is part of ongoing efforts to integrate ecological best practices into developments and provide practical learning experiences for the Company’s apprentices.
