In another step towards meeting our carbon reduction objectives, we are switching our operational fleet and plant machinery from traditional fossil diesel to Hydrotreated Vegetable Oil (HVO). The roll-out is already underway, with our main operational yard at Bicton Business Park and construction sites now being powered by the advanced renewable fuel.

HVO is a second-generation, clean-burning, synthetic biofuel that serves as a renewable diesel alternative. It is sustainably produced from renewable sources such as vegetable oils, animal fats, or used cooking oil through a process that adds hydrogen to create the fuel. Critically, HVO is a direct ‘drop-in’ fuel, meaning it requires no modifications to our existing fleet, fuel systems, or infrastructure, allowing for seamless adoption and instant benefits.
The environmental benefits of this transition are significant. HVO offers a significant reduction in lifecycle greenhouse gas emissions compared to fossil diesel, providing one of the most effective immediate levers for decarbonisation in the sector.
Furthermore, the fuel is cleaner burning, resulting in a noticeable reduction in Nitrogen Oxides NOX and Particulate Matter PM emissions on construction sites, leading to cleaner air quality for teams and local communities. Finally, HVO is also biodegradable and non-toxic, which significantly reduces the potential for long-term environmental damage in the event of a spill compared to standard diesel.
Jason Postans, Procurement Manager, commented on the rollout: “This isn’t just about hitting company targets; it’s about doing the right thing for our planet and the next generation.
HVO gives us the best of both worlds: maintaining the performance we need while immediately driving down our environmental impact.”
